What does it mean and how can you use it in a sentence?

It means – Bringing up something of the past in conversation which may not always be appropriate and could be hurtful to the person in question.
For example in conversation where you’re talking about relationships as a family.
Peter: Yeah like the time Dave had that affair with his lady friend at work while newly married
Peter’s mum: There is no point in digging up the past
