This is a useful expression.
Put someone through something (painful) means that you let someone feel some sort of pain, or stress. For example:
Imagine you find out that your best friends’ partner is cheating on him/her. You decide not to tell them about it because you didn’t want to “put them through that
or You do something for someone that was very hard.
They say: “Thank you so much! Why did you do that for me?”
You say: “I didn’t want to put you through that”
