Working togetherDifference between smell vs scent?

Can someone explain what the difference is?

Does it not mean the same thing?

How can you use both smell and scent?

The heading would be better as “Difference between smell and scent.”

A smell is something you sense with your nose. It is often used when the sensation is not pleasant (but not always).
“There was a terrible smell coming from the drain.”
“The house had a fresh smell when the cleaners had finished.”
A scent is either a pleasant smell or the smell of an animal.
“We knew the model had arrived when we detected the scent of roses.”
“The dogs became agitated when they got the scent of the fox.”
